The world, as we are all aware at this point, is not normal. Outside of hunkering down as a team and figuring out any and all contingency plans for our own company’s survival, as humans we've been asking ourselves - what can WE do, at Society Nine, to make sure that not only we survive as a company but that we offer what resources we do have to helping our local community?
We've spent the last 24 hours thinking about this and doing the math.
Today, I'd like to announce that instead of $5 of every full priced tee or tank purchase going to the Society Nine Community Fund (which you can read more about here), we are increasing that to $20 of every full priced tee or tank sale and donating it to Feeding America and Meals on Wheels. We are retroactively applying this to past orders prior to today, 3/17/20 - so, if you've already bought a tee or tank from us, rest assured that $20 has already been put aside from your purchase as part of this community fund.
In full transparency, this is how the math works. The very first thing we had to address was making sure we covered the actual cost of the product. Then, we addressed what we needed to keep our warehouse staff employed. All additional revenue we are donating.
The math works out as follows:
We are grateful for our community and we know how powerful you are. As a team, we discussed the trade-offs and the importance of also doing what’s right for the community. We decided that so long as our lights can be kept on, and our team can survive, we feel the best way to support our community is to donate the rest to people who need it most. As a business, we know that right now is NOT the time to talk about growth; it's about showing up to the village and figuring out what we can contribute to this community's "stone soup."
If you are unfamiliar, Stone Soup is a European folk story in which hungry strangers convince the people of a town to each share a small amount of their food in order to make a meal that everyone enjoys, and exists as a moral regarding the value of sharing. Now is the time for us to contribute to this stone soup, more than ever.
Why Feeding America and Meals on Wheels?
Oregon Food Bank is one of the largest food banks in the country, and is a member of Feeding America. $10 provides 30 meals (for more info, read here and here) and with catastrophic job losses and school closures causing free/discounted lunch children to lose their only meals, we knew we could make an immediate impact right now with them.
Meals on Wheels provides meals to our community's most vulnerable seniors. They are attempting to raise $250,000 right now to ensure that these seniors are not alone, and going hungry - in a time where getting resources and food becomes an ever daunting challenge given the hysteria and hoard shoppers.
Additionally, you can directly go to these organizations and contribute even more. There are many partners of Feeding America. To find your local food bank, use this handy map provided by Feeding America here.
We will be splitting the Society Nine Community Fund dollars we raise right down the middle to ensure that both organizations receive a financial contribution. We will be following up in the weeks to come with updates on how much we are donating in the spirit of transparency.
We can't thank you enough for joining in, and contributing to our stone soup. We'll make it through this stronger together by offering every resource each and every one of us have, as a community.
